Your horse’s gut does a lot more than digest hay. It’s where a large share of the immune system sits, and it has a lot to do with how well he holds weight, keeps his coat and copes with travel or a busy season. Here’s what helps most, and where our formulas fit.
Key points
- A big share of your horse's immune system lives in and around the gut.
- Plenty of forage, slow feed changes and plenty of water do the most for the gut.
- Long gaps without hay, starchy meals and travel are common things that upset it.
- G-Tract and Immune back up good management, but they never replace it or your vet.

Why the gut matters
The gut lining is one of the biggest borders between your horse and the outside world. So much of his immune tissue lines the gut wall that what happens in his gut shows up in the whole horse.
“Our Warmblood thrives on ImmuBiome G-track. The customer service is also unmatched. They go beyond expectations and provide a high quality product. Highly recommended!”
How the horse gut works
- The stomach is small, roughly 2 to 4 gallons, and makes acid around the clock. That’s why long gaps without forage are hard on horses.
- The small intestine runs around 70 feet. Most sugars, starch, fat and protein are absorbed here.
- The hindgut (cecum and colon) is where microbes ferment fiber into fatty acids that supply a big share of your horse’s daily energy.
The digestive health page walks through each section in more detail.

The microbes and the gut lining
Trillions of microbes live in the hindgut. Your horse can’t digest forage without them, and they help teach his immune system what’s normal. When the mix shifts after a feed change, a long haul or medication, owners often see looser manure or a picky appetite. More on our gut microbiome page.
The lining itself is a single layer of cells, renewed every few days, that lets nutrients in and keeps the rest out. Colostrum and a well-fed microbiome both help maintain a healthy gut lining. Our Leaky Gut page covers how G-Tract supports the gut lining, and our article on leaky gut explains what the term means.
What tends to upset the gut
- Long stretches without forage, overnight especially
- Big starchy meals
- Sudden changes in hay, pasture or feed
- Travel, showing, stall rest and herd changes
- Some medications used long term (ask your vet what to watch for)
- Dusty or moldy hay
Simple habits that help
- Forage first. Keep hay or pasture in front of him most of the day. Most horses need roughly 1.5 to 2 percent of body weight in forage daily.
- Change slowly. Make feed changes over a week or two.
- Watch the water. Many horses drink less in cold weather.
- Turn him out. Time in the field and regular work help keep the gut moving.
- Keep notes. Track manure, appetite and attitude on the My Horses page so changes are easier to spot.
How G-Tract and Immune help
ImmuBiome G-Tract brings together probiotics, live Saccharomyces yeast, bovine colostrum and prebiotics from organic Turkey Tail and Lion’s Mane mushrooms. It supports normal digestive function from the stomach to the hindgut and helps maintain a healthy gut lining.
ImmuBiome Immune shares that mushroom, probiotic and colostrum base but leans toward supporting normal immune function through travel and seasonal change.
The same probiotics, prebiotics and colostrum sit under most of our other formulas too, from Breathe to Joint & Recovery, so his gut gets daily support whatever his main goal.
Our formulas back up good management. They don’t replace it. If your horse is off his feed, showing signs of colic or losing weight, call your vet first.

Questions owners ask us
How can I tell if my horse’s gut needs more support?
Watch for changes in manure, a horse who gets picky about feed, a dull coat, or weight that’s hard to hold. Any of those can have plenty of causes, so talk to your vet before you assume it’s the gut.
How long before I notice a difference with a gut supplement?
Every horse is different. Most owners give a new routine a month or two before judging it. Manure and appetite are usually the first things people notice.
When should I start G-Tract before a trip or show?
A week or two ahead is a good habit, so it’s already part of his routine before the hauling starts. Keep it going through the trip and after you get home, and keep his hay and water as close to normal as you can.
Can I feed G-Tract with my horse’s other supplements?
Usually, yes. It mixes in alongside our other formulas, such as Lean Muscle or Joint & Recovery. If your horse is on medication, check with your vet first.
Are probiotics alone enough for a healthy gut?
They help, but they’re one piece. Those microbes need prebiotics to feed on, which is why every ImmuBiome probiotic formula carries both. Nothing replaces plenty of forage and a consistent routine.
