Lion’s Mane is the shaggy white mushroom that looks more like a frozen waterfall than a mushroom. It’s been eaten and used in East Asian tradition for centuries, and it’s the backbone of our spine and nerve formulas. Here’s why it’s in six of our formulas.
Key points
- Lion's Mane is a shaggy white mushroom named for its looks, not for mane growth.
- We include it to support healthy nerve function, and it also brings prebiotic fiber.
- It's the core of Spine & Nerve and the only mushroom in Nerve Boost.
- Any change in gait, coordination or comfort is a job for your vet first.
What is Lion’s Mane?
Lion’s Mane (Hericium erinaceus) grows on hardwood trees like oak and beech. Instead of a cap, it grows long, soft spines that hang down like a mane, which is where the name comes from. You’ll also see it called bearded tooth, pom pom or monkey head mushroom.
It’s a functional mushroom, meaning it’s valued for more than flavor. Like other mushrooms, it brings beta-glucans and prebiotic fiber, and it contains two families of compounds that researchers find interesting: hericenones in the fruiting body and erinacines in the mycelium.
“Love this product. My horse feels much more free and comfortable.”
What does Lion’s Mane do?
We include Lion’s Mane to support healthy nerve function, and in our gut formulas it also acts as a prebiotic that feeds beneficial hindgut bacteria. Its beta-glucans support normal immune function too.
Most of the research so far comes from the lab and other species rather than horses, so we’re careful not to promise more than that.
If your horse shows any change in gait, coordination or comfort, call your vet first. Lion’s Mane is everyday nutrition, not a stand-in for an exam.

Why we use the whole mushroom
The fruiting body and the mycelium carry different compounds, so we use organic, full-spectrum Lion’s Mane: mycelium, primordia, fruiting bodies and the compounds the mushroom releases as it grows. You can read more about this on our mushrooms page.
Which ImmuBiome formulas contain Lion’s Mane
- Spine & Nerve, where it’s the core ingredient

Lion’s Mane questions
What are the benefits of Lion’s Mane for horses?
We use it to support healthy nerve function, and it also adds prebiotic fiber and beta-glucans to the bucket.
Will Lion’s Mane help my horse’s mane grow?
No, the name comes from the mushroom’s shaggy look, not from anything it does for hair. For mane, tail and coat, good nutrition, grooming and protection from rubbing matter most.
Which ImmuBiome formulas contain Lion’s Mane?
Spine & Nerve, Nerve Boost, G-Tract, Immune, Joint & Recovery and Strength & Stamina. Nerve Boost is the only one that’s Lion’s Mane alone.
Can I feed Nerve Boost and Spine & Nerve together?
Yes. Nerve Boost was made as a companion to Spine & Nerve. Your vet can help you decide whether the pair makes sense for your horse.
Is Lion’s Mane the same in every supplement?
Ours is organic and full spectrum, with mycelium, primordia and fruiting bodies, since hericenones and erinacines sit in different parts of the mushroom. It’s at the heart of Spine & Nerve and Nerve Boost, and it’s also in G-Tract, Immune, Joint & Recovery and Strength & Stamina.
