Why bovine colostrum for adult horses?
Cows make far more colostrum than a calf needs, which makes it a practical, well-researched source for horses. A grown horse can’t absorb antibodies whole the way a newborn foal can, so for adults the value lies mostly along the digestive tract. How to feed it
- Mix it into damp feed so it doesn’t sink to the bottom of the bucket.
- Introduce it over a few days if your horse is fussy about anything new in his bucket.
- Store it well. Lid on tight, somewhere cool and dry, not in a hot trailer tack room.
Foals are different
A newborn foal needs good-quality equine colostrum from the mare in the first hours of life. A foal who hasn’t nursed is a reason to call your vet straight away. A bovine colostrum supplement is for older horses, not a stand-in for the mare.

How long before I see a difference with a colostrum supplement?
Give it a steady couple of months before you judge it. Topline and condition build slowly, alongside good forage and the right work, so keep notes on weight, coat and muscle, and check in with your vet if things aren’t moving.
What should I look for on a colostrum supplement label?

Is bovine colostrum safe for horses with a dairy sensitivity?
Most horses handle it well, but colostrum is a dairy product. If your horse has a known sensitivity, check with your vet before starting.
Can bovine colostrum replace mare’s colostrum for a newborn foal?
No. A newborn foal needs good-quality equine colostrum within the first hours of life. If a foal hasn’t nursed or the mare has little milk, call your vet right away.
