What is EPM?
Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM) is a neurological disease in horses caused by protozoal parasites, most commonly Sarcocystis neurona. It affects the central nervous system, leading to symptoms such as muscle weakness, lack of coordination (ataxia), and other neurological deficits. Horses contract EPM by ingesting feed or water contaminated with the parasite, typically from opossum feces. The disease is known for its varied and often asymmetrical presentation of symptoms, making it a challenge to diagnose and manage.
